Chinniah defends Bawumia on timing of LGBTQ+ comments
13.04.2024 LISTEN

After more than seven years of anticipation regarding Vice President Dr. Bawumia's stance on the LGBTQ+ debate, he finally addressed the issue during an Eid-ul-Fitr gathering in Kumasi a few days ago.

He unequivocally stated his opposition to it, both as Vice President and potentially as President if elected.

Currently, the LGBTQ+ Bill awaits the President's assent, pending resolution of two lawsuits. The Presidency has indicated it will delay receiving the bill until the court's final decision.

Critics have questioned the timing of Dr. Bawumia's statement, wondering why he waited so long to voice his opinion, particularly when the issue was at its peak of public discourse. Some speculate whether his declaration was merely a political maneuver to garner votes in the upcoming elections.

However, during the April 13, 2024, edition of TV3's Key Point, Mr. Hamidu Chinniah defended the timing of Dr. Bawumia's statement. He argued that the Vice President chose an appropriate moment to express his views, emphasizing that he needed the right platform to do so effectively.

Comparing Dr. Bawumia to John Dramani Mahama, Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Chinniah praised Dr. Bawumia for addressing the issue while holding an official position with constitutional mandates, unlike Mahama, who expressed his views while in opposition.

Furthermore, Mr. Chinniah criticized Mahama for not responding promptly to remarks attributed to him by LGBTQ+ advocate Andrew Solomon. He highlighted Mahama Ayarga's subsequent apology after issuing a statement on Mahama's behalf.

Regarding calls for Dr. Bawumia to go beyond expressing his stance and influence the President's decision on the bill, Mr. Chinniah argued that the Vice President's role is advisory, in accordance with the constitution.

In contrast, Hon. Kofi Adams, Member of Parliament for Buem, contended that religious and community leaders have already expressed their positions on the LGBTQ+ issue. He emphasized the need for legislative action to resolve the matter, especially following President Akufo-Addo's comments suggesting possible legalization under certain conditions.

Adams stressed the importance of finalizing legislation to address the LGBTQ+ issue, citing increased advocacy from community members following President Akufo-Addo's remarks.
