NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been avoiding engaging in economic debates and discourse as Ghana grapples with high inflation and debt, according to a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

Kwakye Ofosu, a former Deputy Minister of Communications, wrote in a post on Monday, April 29, that it is clear Bawumia, who is the head of the Economic Management Team (EMT), has presided over a bankrupt economy with unsustainable debt levels and a collapsed currency.

"It is beyond debate that under Bawumia’s utterly useless leadership of the EMT, Ghana is bankrupt, saddled with unsustainable debt on which we have defaulted, our currency has collapsed, over a million bondholders including pensioners, have had their monies appropriated by government because it cannot pay and we have high inflation which has led to the worst cost of living crisis," Kwakye Ofosu stated.

The NDC member further claimed Bawumia knows the poor economic performance puts him at risk of losing the 2024 presidential elections on the ticket of New Patriotic Party (NPP).

"It is also beyond debate that because of this horrible performance, he is almost certain to lose the 2024 elections for which reason, he has in a cowardly fashion, fled economic discourse and is claiming to be a mate," Kwakye Ofosu remarked.

Ghana is currently under the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) program for an extended credit facility of $3 billion over a period of three years.

The country is struggling with inflation at over 25% and its public debt stock is projected to exceed 80% of GDP, according to the IMF.

However, Bawumia has been relatively silent on discussions around the economy unlike he used to do while in opposition.
