Civil society group Election Watch Ghana has accused the Electoral Commission of a lack of transparency and has expressed concerns the 2024 elections could be rigged.

In a letter addressed to the British High Commission on April 24, Election Watch Ghana said there seems to be an occurrence of “darkness before election" with the Commission "shrouding the entire poll process under a cloud of secrecy".

The letter jointly signed by the National Youth Organizer of the GCPP, Jude Balma and Mark Arko, National Youth Organiser of PNC said "This raises serious questions about their[EC’s] intentions to conduct free and fair polls."

The group had requested serial numbers for biometric voter registration kits to be used in the upcoming limited voter registration from the EC.

However, they said “the EC has refused to even acknowledge receipt of our request letter."

"The conduct of the Electoral Commission, in denying us the opportunity to engage on such a critical matter, is what we call Darkness before Election and raises our fear that the 2024 general election is being rigged," they added.

Election Watch Ghana warned any deficiencies or partisan behaviour by the EC could undermine trust in Ghana's electoral system.

The group has now petitioned Ghana's international partners to compel the EC to disclose the information.
