Council of Ghanaian Associations in Washington DC metro area celebrates Ghana@67 in grand style

Ghanaians residing across the Washington DC metro area came together at the Holiday Express Inn in College Park, Maryland, on Saturday, March 9, 2024, to commemorate Ghana’s Independence Day.

The event’s theme, “To assist orphanages in Ghana,” underscored the collective effort to support orphanages back home. Representatives from various Ghanaian associations under the Council of Ghanaian Associations (COGA) attended the event, including the Ga-Adangbe group, Kwahu community, Asante Kotoko, Ewe Association of Washington DC, Asanteman, Okyeman Kuo, Ebusua, and Brong Ahafo Association.

In his address, Mr. Henry Adu, Chairman of COGA, urged Ghanaians in the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area to make a significant impact on the lives of their compatriots in Ghana. He highlighted COGA’s ongoing efforts to assist and emphasized the importance of supporting orphaned children who are among the most vulnerable in Ghana.

Mr. Adu expressed gratitude to the event’s chairman, special guests, chiefs, queen mothers, association leaders, and opinion leaders for their attendance. The Ghanaian Ambassador to the United States was represented by a senior officer from the Ghana embassy.

Speaking on behalf of the ambassador, Mr. Mohammed Karande, the consular officer, conveyed the ambassador’s regrets for not being present and extended warm wishes to all Ghanaians celebrating Independence Day. He also called for prayers for a peaceful election in Ghana later that year.

Dr. Charles Osei Dankwah, President, and CEO of Hawknard Specialty Products LLC, served as the chairman for the occasion. He commended COGA for its 35 years of dedicated service and encouraged all Ghanaians in the metro area to collaborate with COGA for the betterment of Ghana. Dr. Osei Dankwah reflected on Ghana’s journey since independence, highlighting the country’s growth and development.

A fundraising segment was a highlight of the evening, featuring raffle prizes such as TV sets, security cameras, and wall clocks. Several community members were recognized and presented with plaques for their contributions, including Dr. Charles Osei Dankwah and Mr. and Mrs. Koi Larbi. The law firm of Ofori and Associates was also acknowledged for its support of the Ghanaian community.

The event featured cultural performances by various associations, accompanied by music from the Forever Friends band led by Jo Pompo and DJ Highlife.

Tap Tap Send, Ekumfi Juice, State Farm Insurance, and Gurma Spicy Pies were the headline sponsors of the event, supporting the celebration and fundraising efforts.

Dr. Margaret Tabiri and Mr. William Adzimahe served as the lively MCs for the evening, ensuring guests had an enjoyable experience. Nuna Ametepi and Linda Senyo acted as hostesses for the event.

The Ewe Association of Washington DC Metro Inc. also played a significant role in the event, contributing to the success of the Independence Day celebration.
