NDC UK Ireland Chapter launches 2024 Election Battle Fund to raise 100,000 for Mahama
27.12.2023 LISTEN

The NDC UK & Ireland Chapter launched a fundraising event on Saturday 23rd December 2023 to mobilize funds for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024.

The theme for the event was the "2024 Battle Fund Launch" and its goal was to raise funds for H.E John Dramani Mahama's presidential race in the forthcoming election.

The Hon Kwame Agbodza, MP for Adaklu and Minority Chief Whip in Parliament, chaired the event. Other attendees included the Director of International Relations, Hon Alex Segbefia; Deputy Director of International Relations (UK), Dr. Karl Arhin; National Treasurer, Hon Alex Kyeremeh and the NDC UK and Ireland Chapter Chairman, Conrad Dumbah.

The event marked the start of fundraising activities which comprise a series of activities to pool resources from Chapter members and supporters in the UK. It aims to raise a minimum target of £100,000 over the ten months ending in September 2024 for the 2024 election campaign. This will help strengthen the NDC's campaign efforts to secure victory in the 2024 elections.

Attendees were encouraged to contribute by picking various donation cards ranging from a little as Bronze card at £100 to a Silver card, a Gold card, a Platinum card to a Platinum Plus card. Payment for each card can be spread over ten (10) months to ease the burden on donors. The event launch was a success with just over 30% of the minimum target amount realized in pledges from members at the launch. Other events are planned to be held to raise funds throughout the next 10 months. A fundraising dinner dance is to be held in the first half of 2024 to crown it all.

Hon. Alex Segbefia and Hon, Dr. Karl Arhin celebrated the UK and Ireland Chapter for spearheading and implementing the Battle Fund initiative to help resource the party. They also encouraged the Chapter to continue making the transformational changes needed to recapture its pride of place within the NDC chapters in the diaspora.

Hon. Kwame Agbodza, the event's Chairman, reiterated the need for members to contribute their financial and human resources to help kick out the NPP government, which has saddled Ghana with extreme hardship. He echoed the need for members to match them boot for boot as expounded by the flagbearer of the party.

Chairman Conrad Dumbah acknowledged the very difficult economic environment in the UK with increases in the cost of living despite the recent fall in inflation to 4.6%. He also admitted that the severe hardship visited on Ghanaians by the clueless NPP government has forced members to remit larger portions of their income to family and friends in Ghana further depleting their pockets. He however admonished that doing nothing to contribute to the NDC's victory is not an option as that will only increase the current suffering. He advised that Ghanaians would endure more suffering if the current hopeless NPP government is not thrown out of power in 2024. He therefore encouraged members to contribute to the NDC Battle Fund to help resource the NDC to rescue Ghana from the incompetent grip of the NPP regime.

Chairman Conrad further explained that contributing in cash to the NDC's election campaign will benefit members. This is because once the NDC returns to power, it will tame inflation to preserve the value of the investments and savings made by Ghanaians in the diaspora in the mother country. The NDC will also deliver good governance, social amenities, and a stable economy which will deliver jobs and money into the pockets of families in Ghana and therefore reduce the financial burden on diasporans.

He also stated that a percentage of the funds raised will be given to the two parliamentary aspirants from the UK in their parliamentary campaigns. He, therefore, entreated members to contribute their widow’s mite in the full knowledge that they will be supporting victory for President Mahama and the two parliamentary candidates from the UK and Ireland Chapter (Simon Aworigo - PC for Navrongo Central Constituency and Mavis Kuukua Bissue - PC Ahanta West Constituency).

The event also witnessed ideas generated from various branches of the chapter. The Chairman of the Fundraising Committee and Vice Chairman of the NDC UK and Ireland Chapter, Seth Anorson and his able team were commended for the fundraising launch event and efforts to bring back the UK and Ireland chapter as a strong branch in the diaspora.

The event was well attended and witnessed an unprecedented amount of pledges and donations in a single evening. Members who were unable to pledge were encouraged to contact the fundraising committee to pick a donation card.
