Arm Wrestling has been introduced in Ghana as the 40thsporting discipline under the National Sports Authority (NSA) on Tuesday.

The new Ghana Arm Wrestling Federation is headed by sports broadcaster, Charles Osei Asibey and they have already organized competitions in Accra and Kumasi.

Inaugurating the Federation, Mr. Saka Acquaye, Deputy Director General (Technical) of the NSA advised the officials to have a national character and take the sport to the ten regions to popularize it to attract patronage and support financially.

He commended the executive of the Arm Wrestling Federation for their vision to support lesser known sports and allow people to choose disciplines that they are interested in.

Saka Acquaye was sad that the Authority is cash strap and does not have enough funds to support the sporting disciplines. He wondered why when Ghana had not discovered oil, the NSA was given an annual budget of 54ghc million, but now they got only 22ghc million, out of which 12ghc million is for salaries and emoluments.

Osei Asibey thanked the NSA for accepting the new Federation and promised to abide by all the rules and regulations, as well as decentralize the sport to reach the districts and communities. He called on corporate Ghana to support the new sport.

Arm wrestling involves two contestants, each places one arm on a surface with their elbows bent and touching the surface and they grip each other’s hand. The goal is to pin the other’s arm onto the surface, with the winner’s arm over the loser’s arm.

It is a traditional recreation in most African communities but interest in it as a professional sport started early this year.

Joshua Mensah, a director of the NSA who chaired the inauguration urged the new Federation to be active and engage the youth frequently to be trained as officials and representatives.

Meanwhile, Mix Martial Arts (MMA) has also been introduced and inaugurated in Ghana.
