Ghanaian boxing sensation Samuel Takyi has announced his retirement from the country's national amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers, as he sets his sights on a professional boxing career.

The 23-year-old Olympic medalist made the announcement via his official social media accounts on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, expressing gratitude for the support he received throughout his amateur career and reflecting on his historic achievement at the Tokyo Olympics, where he clinched a bronze medal for Ghana.

"It is with a heavy heart that I leave the amateur ranks and fully commit myself to my professional career," Takyi shared in his statement.

He added, "I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way, culminating in that historic moment at the Tokyo Olympics."

Acknowledging the instrumental role played by his coaches and supporters, Takyi expressed his gratitude to key figures in Ghana's sports administration, including Alhaji Inusah, Alhaji Taufiq, and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, as well as his amateur coaches, particularly Coach Asare, the Head Coach of the Black Bombers.

"I hope now to have the same success in the professional ranks and bring another world champion home to Ghana," Takyi continued.
