Four graduate students of Development Management at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have brought practical meaning to their course by empowering women in Agbozume in the Weija-Gbawe municipality of the Greater Accra region in income-generating activities.

Rhoda Mensah, George Nafiu Mpoah, Delight Sozah and Janet Epton embarked on this social entrepreneurship and philanthropic project in what they describe as "Shepreneurship initiative."

The group, also known as “InspireSHE Alliance” has held a skills development training session for the Agbozume community in the Weija-Gbawe municipality, a settler community close to the Weija dam.

As part of the training, InspireSHE Alliance took the women through the production, branding and marketing of liquid soap with the view to empowering the beneficiaries economically.

Sustainable Development Goals
The team believes that the initiative is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5 and 8.

SDG 5 touches on Gender equality in all programmes, right from the planning stages, to making sure we are as equitable as possible while SDG 8 is about "decent work and economic growth" Goal 8 aims to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

The objective of the Shepreneurship initiative is to provide women in underprivileged communities skills to enhance gender equality in work as well as provide decent jobs and economic growth for the community and nation at large.

Beneficiaries were encouraged to venture into the liquid soap making and use the knowledge gained in marketing techniques to earn a living to enhance their living conditions.

Opportunity was provided for start-up kits to be given to women who opted to venture into this business opportunity.

Hands-on experience
The team lead, Ms Rhoda Mensah, stated that the graduate program provides students with hands on experience in development management as development practitioners.

She indicated that every development project or initiative should be geared towards fulfilling the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
