The Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has criticized the use of taxpayer funds for the construction of Ghana's controversial national cathedral project.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, April 18, Franklin Cudjoe slammed officials for taking taxes from struggling Ghanaians to finance the cathedral.

Despite taxpayer money spent on the project, the policy advisor bemoaned the fact that it is still at a foundation stage, describing it as a “clumsy pit.”

"I see dutiful tax officers struggling to convince already broken tax payers to pay more. And yet some unaccountable wasteful executive living large at our expense and decides to grab the tax and dig a clumsy pit claiming to raise an offering to the Lord in the name of a Cathedral. Nonsense!!" Cudjoe wrote.

His comments come amid ongoing debate around the estimated $250 million needed to complete the cathedral located in Accra.

Supporters argue it will boost tourism, but critics say the funds allocated so far - over GH¢339 million for the foundation alone - should go toward priorities like healthcare and education.

There are also questions about accountability and value for money, as the project's costs continue rising.

Meanwhile, the project has stalled for over a year due to financial challenges, according to the secretariat.
