The Methodist Church of Ghana has made a move to address the perceived delay in President Nana Akufo-Addo's signing into law of the Sexual Human Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021.
Led by the Presiding Bishop, Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, the church has announced plans to hold direct discussions with President Akufo-Addo regarding the matter.
There is an ongoing standoff between the President and the Speaker of Parliament concerning the signing of the bill into law, which continues to overshadow the legislative process.
The president announced he would only take action on the bill once the Supreme Court determines two legal challenges filed against its transmission to the presidency and signing.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, in a retaliatory move, also suspended the approval process for the president’s new ministerial nominees based on a case filed by opposition MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.
The Supreme Court trashed that case on Wednesday, 27 March 2024.
In light of these developments, Most Rev. Dr. Boafo has expressed optimism about the potential outcome of their meeting with the President.
At a news conference held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, he remarked, "It is unanimous that Ghanaians are not in support of the activities of the LGBTQI+ community. We are planning to meet the President at the Jubilee House to dialogue on the best way forward.”
