The alleged sharing of money by agents of incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Baba Jamal could not save him from defeat.

There was spontaneous jubilation after officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) announced that he has lost the election to Mercy Adu-Gyamfi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

As of yesterday, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were still celebrating their famous victory, especially when Baba Jamal had bragged that he would maintain the seat he won in 2012.

Baba Jamal secured 15,905 votes while NPP’s Mercy Adu-Gyamfi, popularly called Ama Sey, had 21,433.

Baba Jamal described his main contender as hairdresser, who is not fit to represent the people of Akwatia in Parliament.

According to reports, the people decided to punish him for that conduct despite the fact that he ensured the rehabilitation of Akwatia town roads and construction of the new Community Senior High School (SHS) at Takwaroase.

He was nowhere to be found in the constituency after the election and his supporters were mute.

Meanwhile, in the Lower West Akim, the ruling NDC candidate, Naana Ampem-Darko had 18,011 votes while NPP’s Eyiah Kyei Baffour polled 27,056 votes to secure the seat for the party.

Mr Kyei Baffour told DAILY GUIDE that Naana Ampem-Darko, who was close to the Flagstaff House, spent over GH¢10 million on her campaign.

“This young lady was sharing money everywhere that she went. She was distributing goodies like cloths, bicycles and sewing machines like nobody’s business but could not win,” he said, adding that God helped the NPP to win and assured his constituents that he would promote their interests in Parliament.
