By African Union Commission (AUC)

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has condemned in the strongest terms an attack that killed at least 12 people in the northeastern border town of Mandera on 25 October 2016. The attack, which was claimed by the Al Qaeda linked terrorist group Al Shabaab was the second in Mandera in less than three weeks.

The Chairperson expresses the AU’s heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes speedy recovery to the injured. She assures the Government and people of Kenya of the AU’s full solidarity and support in these difficult circumstances. She reiterates the AU’s readiness to support Kenya and the countries of the region through the existing regional and continental mechanisms including, the Djibouti process on the Enhancement of Security Cooperation in the East Africa region and the AU Convention on Cross Border Cooperation, known as the Niamey convention, which contains provisions relation to border security.

The Chairperson of the Commission once again appeals to the international community to renew its commitment to defeat terrorists groups, whose only agenda is to cause havoc, destruction and death by providing the necessary support to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) engaged in efforts to defeat the terrorist group in Somalia.
