Sociology Alumni Prepares For Grand Homecoming

Key Alumni and stakeholders of the Department of Sociology of the University of Ghana have held a meeting to initiate the formation of a national/international Alumni of the Department.

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Chris Abochie and co-chaired by Prof. Clara Fayorsey who are both very senior faculty members of the Sociology Department. Also present were very prominent senior members including the Anthropologist Professor Emeritus G.K. Nukunya and Dr Ohene Konadu. Professor Ernest Dumor, former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority and Chairman of the Komla Dumor Foundation also attended the meeting to lend his support. Also in attendance were other lecturers of the Department and some alumni.

After deliberations, members present decided to hold the first homecoming event of the alumni of the Department of Sociology of the University of Ghana on 4^thFebruary, 2017.

The meeting also led to the formation of a committee which will work towards the Homecoming and other immediate activities. The interim committee which has been established to form the alumni association held its first meeting on Tuesday 4^thOctober, 2016 at the Department of Sociology and was convened by Professor Emeritus G. K. Nukunya.

The Department of Sociology was established in 1950 with its first Head of Department being Prof. K. A. Busia (later became the Prime Minister of Ghana) with support from two other lecturers Dr. David Tait and Dr. Kurankyi Taylor. Over the past 66 years, the Department has produced great scholars, researchers, sociologists and practitioners serving in various institutions.

The Department of Sociology has grown steadily over the years to become the largest department in the School of the Social Sciences. It has trained and continues to train hundreds of young men and women for various sectors of Ghanaian and global life. The Department services other departments in the University such as the departments of Nursing, Social Work, Family and Consumer Studies, and the Faculty of Engineering. Others are the Centre for Social Policy Studies, Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy, University of Ghana Medical School, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) and the Ghana Police College. The influence of the Department extends beyond the academy to both public and private institutions as well as local and international civil society groups.
