Rawlings accusation of NDC is wrong -NDC

From Michael Boateng, Sunyani
“His Excellency, former President Jerry John Rawlings, got it wrong by pointing accusing fingers at some top members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), a party he founded, of attempting to hang him.”

Mr. Prince Diawuo, a member of the Brong-Ahafo Regional NDC communication team, told The Chronicle in reaction to the front page story – “NDC Wants to 'Hang' Me”, published on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, by this paper.

According Mr. Diawuo, the $5 million Abacha gift saga is of national interest and the concern of every Ghanaian, which Dr. Henry Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), is of no exception.

“Why should Mr. Rawlings point accusing fingers at some bigwigs in the NDC for inducing Dr. Lartey? Will he be comfortable, if he (Mr Rawlings) is accused of sponsoring his wife, Nana Konadu, to attack the NDC to lose in the 2016 elections?” he asked.

Mr. Charles Diawuo, who lost his bid to become the Brong-Ahafo Regional Communication Director, insisted that Dr. Henry Lartey is equally a Ghanaian, as the wife of the former President, Nana Konadu, who has the right to raise concerns on any national issues.

He said Mr. Rawlings should come again, as a respectable person, who the majority of the NDC faithful adore and respect. “It is amazing for the founder of the NDC to think that members of his own party want to hang him.”

According to Prince Diawuo, President Rawlings has nothing to fear, because, as a leader who stands for probity and accountability, and an anti-corruption crusader, he (Rawlings) must put himself together and prove himself before the EOCO and CHRAJ at the appropriate time.

“Mr. Rawlings should bear in mind that every Ghanaian could have taken the matter on, as Dr. Henry Lartey has done, and it is not under the inducement of any political guru from the NDC or wherever,” he stressed.

He said it is the wish of every Ghanaian to ascertain the truth, as to what the money was meant for; “Was it a gift to the state, or a personal gift to the then President Rawlings, and also for what reason was the money given?”

Meanwhile, a staunch member of the NDC from Berekum, Mr. Oliver Ayi, said he somehow agrees with the assumption of the former President, because, as a respectable statesman, there is no way he would talk anyhow without facts.

Mr. Ayi continued that President Rawlings still has some confidants within the top hierarchy of the NDC, and any decision taken on him would be relayed back to him, so he might be speaking from what he had heard.

“Why didn't Mr Rawlings accuse the major opposition NPP of inducing Dr. Lartey, but members of his own party, which he formed out of his tears and blood?” he queried.

Mr. Ayi said now that the matter has been sent to the EOCO and CHRAJ, Ghanaians would be observing the outcome, which would surely vindicate Mr. Rawlings for doing nothing wrong on the said $5 million Abacha gift.

Mr. Frank Gyabaah, another known NDC member, said President Rawlings’ accusation could not be swept under the carpet, but demands an urgent probe within the ranks of the NDC for peace and unity to prevail.

“We know President Rawlings does not hide his frustrations and feelings about the happenings in the NDC and the country, so he might be speaking, based on intelligence reports gathered from the NDC top hierarchy,” he noted.
