From Richard Owusu-Akyaw.
The streets of Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, have been inundated with security cameras, allegedly mounted by National Security.

The cameras, fitted beneath solar panels, are located at almost every intersection in the metropolis, notably, roundabouts.

In places like Labour Roundabout, two galvanised poles have been mounted, with four cameras pointing in the various directions of the four routes there.

Other places where these cameras have been sighted include Roman Hill, Airport Roundabout, Suame Roundabout, and Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, among other places.

In a city where streetlights are not the priority of the authorities, the snag with the installation of such security cameras is that they (security cameras) can only operate effectively during the day, from 06:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m.

At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Roundabout, which is in darkness at night, the security cameras would be on holiday, as the Boys Company road and Centre for National Culture road remain in darkness, a development the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has failed to address over a long period of time.

A security personnel who spoke to Ashanti File on condition of anonymity about this development, confirmed that the security cameras were being installed at the instance of National Security.

He explained that the cameras will aid the police in the fight against crime and other acts of violence, adding that they will be using drones and other gadgets in their operations in the coming months to keep miscreants at bay.

The security chief stressed that such technological devices will enable the security agents to pick up intelligence and act swiftly upon them.
