PPP supporters besiege court premises

Accra, Oct. 20, GNA - Some supporters of Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) on Thursday, besieged an Accra High Court with various placards demonstrating their abhorrence to the disqualification of Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, the Party's Presidential Nominee from the Election 2016.

The Party supporters clad in PPP White and Red T-shirts with the effigy of Dr Nduom imbedded in the middle whilst others have the effigy of the late Mrs Eva Lokko PPP 2012 Vice Presidential Candidates in the middle.

Some of the placards read: 'Charlotte, Bring Nduom Back,' 'We need change,' and 'We need Nduom'.

The vociferous PPP supporters congregated adjacent the New Court Complex, amidst singing, drumming and dancing, in support of Dr Nduom.

Mrs Bridgette Dzorgbenuku, PPP Vice Presidential Nominee and scores of PPP Parliamentary candidates were in court.

Dr Nduom and 12 others were disqualified from the contest by the Electoral Commission (EC) based on legal errors committed during the filling of the 2016 Presidential Nomination Forms.

The PPP had filed a writ seeking an order of the Court to restrain Mrs Charlotte Osei, the Electoral Commissioner.

He is praying the Court to stop the EC from proceeding with the balloting for the position of Presidential Candidates for the December 7, polls.

PPP is also seeking an order directed at the Electoral Commissioner to grant Dr Nduom the opportunity to amend and alter one anomaly found on his nomination papers and accept his nomination as amended so he could contest in the polls as Presidential Candidate.

Dr Nduom and 12 others were disqualified from the contest by the EC based on legal errors committed during the filling of the 2016 Presidential Nomination Forms.

Some of the reasons outlined by the EC that led to the disqualification of the aspirants are filing anomalies including fraudulent signatures, absence of a required number of signatures and improper filling of nomination forms.

The restraining order was in a Notice of Motion for an Order for Judicial Review.

The PPP applicant contended that his disqualification was in breach of the rules of natural justice and an error on the face of the record.

PPP is seeking for further orders as the court may deem fit.
