Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak has disclosed that there are currently 5,400 schools under trees in the country.

According to him, this is proof that government's assertion that adequate provision has been made in educational infrastructure is false.

“We all know that basic education is the foundation as far as education is concerned. According to government’s own statistics, we have 14,532 KGs in Ghana. For primary schools we have 14,368, for JHS we have 11,735 and for SHS we have 699. This is from government’s report given to us in parliament.

“As we speak today we have about 5,400 schools under trees. It then goes on to challenge the assertion that adequate provision has been made in terms of educational infrastructure at the basic level. If we have over 5000 schools under trees that should tell you government is not doing as well as it says it’s doing,” Dr. Clement Apaak said in an interview with TV3.

He said unlike the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the former government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made a conscious effort to address schools under trees.

He said the NDC government before leaving office in 2017 practically eliminated schools under trees.
