May 10: Glovo closes Ghana operations, ceases services by 10pm
LISTEN

Spanish on-demand delivery platform Glovo will be closing its operations in Ghana, ceasing all services in the country by 10pm tonight.

In an email sent to partner restaurants that subscribe to Glovo's delivery services, the company stated that "building a stronger position in the market and achieving profitability would require substantial investment over an extended period of time."

The email, signed by Glovo, further explained "This is why we have decided to redirect our resources towards the other 23 countries where Glovo operates, enabling us to better serve the millions of customers who use the Glovo app every day."

According to the notice, "as of May 10th, 10:00 pm, our customer app will no longer be available for placing orders."

It assured restaurants that "you will receive all outstanding payments following our Terms and Conditions in due time without delays."

Glovo's entry into the Ghanaian market in 2021 aimed to provide delivery service for meals, groceries and other items ordered via its app.

The multi-category delivery start-up entered Africa in 2018 and is currently present in about seven countries on the continent.

Its exit from Ghana comes two years after investing €3.5 million ($3.7 million) to expand its operations.
