The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has expressed confidence that the successful implementation of the Electronic Value Added Tax (E-VAT) system will significantly boost revenue collection and help curb tax evasion in the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 9, the GRA provided an update on the progress of the E-VAT implementation, which is being rolled out in phases.
It noted that the pilot phase saw a 58% increase in VAT revenue, representing over GH¢384 million in additional contributions.
"Electronic VAT invoicing efficiency contributed to a revenue impact of GH¢124 million, accounting for 32% of this increase," the GRA said quoting results from the pilot phase.
The tax collector said the initial rollout phase, which targets large taxpayers accounting for 80% of VAT contributions, has seen an encouraging 175% progress rate against weekly onboarding targets.
"We are confident of the significant positive impact that the E-VAT will have on VAT contributions, and takes this opportunity to assure all stakeholders of its steadfast commitment to the comprehensive and rapid implementation of the E-VAT system,” the statement noted.
The GRA believes the transparent, digital E-VAT system will promote accountability in tax administration.
