NDC Technical challenges and internet connectivity issues: NDC accuses EC of voter registration suppression tactics
WED, 08 MAY 2024 LISTEN

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned what it perceives as deliberate efforts by the Electoral Commission (EC) to suppress voter registration during the ongoing exercise for first-time voters ahead of the 2024 general election.

Technical challenges and internet connectivity issues on May 7, 2024, sparked allegations from the NDC, suggesting a systematic attempt to hinder voter participation.

Mr Godwin Ako Gunn, the Deputy National Communications Officer for the NDC, attributed the delays and challenges experienced during the voter registration process to underlying issues within the EC's system.

In an interview with Otafrigya Kaayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku on Accra 100.5 FM's Ghana Yensom morning show, Mr Gunn expressed concern over the EC's handling of the registration exercise, citing a lack of adequate preparation and communications.

Mr Gunn criticised the absence of pilot testing, advertising, announcements, and posters to inform the public about the commencement of the registration exercise, highlighting a departure from established EC procedures.

He viewed the technical glitches and internet challenges as subtle tactics employed by the EC to suppress voter turnout, particularly targeting first-time voters critical to the electoral process.

Furthermore, Mr Gunn raised concerns about the EC's credibility, questioning the appointment of a party-affiliated individual as the head of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) within the commission.

He suggested that such appointments could compromise the neutrality and integrity of the electoral process.

Asserting the NDC's commitment to ensuring inclusive and fair elections, Mr Gunn emphasised the party's determination to prevent voter suppression and uphold democratic principles.

He pledged the NDC's full support to facilitate voter registration and empower citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote, aiming to unseat what the party perceives as an incompetent government led by President Nana Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.

In conclusion, Mr Gunn reiterated the NDC's unwavering stance against any attempts to undermine the electoral process and assured the public of the party's vigilance in safeguarding the integrity of the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The NDC's accusations against the Electoral Commission underscore growing tensions surrounding voter registration in Ghana.

"As the country prepares for the upcoming general election, ensuring transparent and accessible registration processes is paramount for upholding democracy and promoting civic participation," the NDC averred.
