The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Students' Representative Council (SRC) is calling for calm among students following the controversial implementation of new tuition fees set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

In a statement dated May 7, Public Relations Officer of the SRC Belinda Nketia acknowledged the "dire" financial burden posed by GTEC's decision to enforce an additional GHC100 fee.

However, the KNUST SRC assured students that the SRC is actively engaging stakeholders to negotiate a solution.

"Its full implementation at this dire moment has recently resulted in additional GHc 100 charges," the statement said.

“The SRC has taken cognizance of the burden it brings to the already-burdened students,” it added.

So far, the SRC says it has connected with the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), who are pursuing negotiations at the national level.

It is also in discussion with other university leaders "to ascertain the best way forward to serve the collective interest of students."

Internally, the statement says KNUST management has pledged to "rectify the miscalculated bill of $100 for the International students."
