Accra, June 30, GNA - The Ghana Beach Soccer Association has launched the 2016 Unity Cup to prepare athletes ahead of the AFCON Beach Soccer qualifiers and also to promote unity and peace before and after the General Election in November.

The two-day competition, from July 15-17 at the Laboma beach resort in Accra, will involve teams from the Greater Accra, Western, Central and Volta Regions for the ultimate trophy at stake and an undisclosed amount.

Speaking at the launch, the President of the Association, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah expressed gratitude to title sponsors Ghandour Cosmetics Ltd and other partners, Santa Cola and Puma, for their involvement in developing the discipline.

He said ''Beach Soccer is one of the fastest growing sports and this has been confirmed by FIFA. What we have to do now is to play our role and engage the youth in projecting peace in the country. I'm grateful to the sponsors for coming on board and hope others would join in.

The Director of the National Sports Authority, Joe Kpenge, urged the team to exhibit their talent. I wish the best team wins the trophy. ''I'm grateful for how beach soccer is developing and I thank the sponsors for their immense contribution towards developing the sport''.

The representatives of Ghandour Cosmetics and Santa Cola Company said, their involvement in supporting the competition stems from the fact that Beach Soccer in Ghana has a bright future.
