The Amasaman police have apprehended a 35-year-old driver who allegedly hired the services of a taxi driver to Obeyeyie Boosu, near Amasaman, and attempted to snatch the vehicle from him.
The suspect, Jacob Soku, a native of Avalari near Abir in the Volta Region, allegedly twisted the neck of the driver in an attempt to snatch the vehicle, but luck eluded him when some people came to rescue the victim and further assisted in apprehending him.
Soku is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The Amasaman District Police Commander, DSP Elvis Bawa Sadongo, who confirmed the story to DAILY GUIDE, said the incident occurred on September 20, 2016.
He said the victim, Solomon Asante, is the driver of a Daewoo Matiz with registration number GS 5753-14.
On that fateful day, Jacob Soku approached the complainant at Obeyeyie to take him to the Boosu area to pick his sister who was seriously sick to the hospital.
The suspect, according to the police, sat on the front seat and while they were on the way to Boosu, he started making some calls.
The suspect was said to have ordered the driver to pick another commuter – a man he claimed was the husband of his sick sister – before they continued the journey.
The complainant said they got to a remote area where Jacob asked him to use a particular road that was very rough.
Sensing danger, the complainant said he asked the two men to get down from the car because he could no longer continue the journey due to the bad nature of the road.
The said sister's husband got down first and asked them to wait for him while he walked to the house to bring the sick woman.
A few minutes later, Jacob allegedly attacked the cabbie and ordered him to surrender the keys.
After struggling for some time inside the vehicle, Jacob allegedly twisted the neck of the driver to further force the victim to release the car but he shouted for help.
Some passersby and residents of the area immediately came to the rescue of the driver and apprehended the suspect.
He was later handed over to the Amasaman police for prosecution.
Upon interrogation, Jacob Soku admitted the offence and added that he conspired with one Ismaila, the said husband of his sick sister, to snatch the taxi from the driver.
He will be taken to court today for prosecution.
