Bishop Herman Old Boys Union (BHOBU) has held a ceremony to honour a pioneer master of Bishop Herman College, Mr. Conrad Etu- Mantey who devoted his entire life to the Roman Catholic second cycle institution based in Kpando in the Volta Region.

Mr. Etu- Mantey was posted to Bishop Herman College, in 1953, a year after it was established and worked there till he retired in 1987.

He is said to have taught virtually every subject but fondly remembered as an exceptional Geography and Sports master. He has held various positions over the years including Housemaster, Senior Housemaster and Assistant Headmaster.

In retirement, he was Chairman of the Board of Governors for several years.

Mr. Etu- Mantey who turned 89, this month is considered a kind hearted disciplinarian who actively assisted the first and second headmasters of the College to nurture and sustain a culture of discipline, hard work and academic excellence, which has remained with the College till date.

Speaker after speaker at the event eulogised the former Assistant Headmaster and spoke about how his nature and style changed the lives of many students for the better.

Some Old boys including former Executive Director of the National Identification Authority, Prof Ernest Dumor, former Ghana Cocoa Board Chief Executive, Tony Fofie, Board Chairman of Ghana Tourist Development Company, Edem Kpodo, Director General of the National Sports Authority Joe Kpenge and Board Chairman of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and National President of BHOBU, Prof. Tony Sallar took turns to speak passionately about the selfless dedication of Mr. Etu- Mantey, recounting their own experiences with him.

On his part, the Vicar General of the Ho Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church Monsignor Horlu, standing in for the bishop of the Diocese, Bishop Fianu, who was away in Rome, said Mr. Etu- Mantey is also a stalwart in the Church and commended him for his role in deepening the faith throughout the Volta Region.

Mr. Etu- Mantey who attended the ceremony with his family was grateful to the Old boys and said he continues to have the College at heart.

He urged the old students to continue to excel in their various endeavours and to also support their alma mater to maintain its enviable records.

Bishop Herman College has and continues to record very impressive academic achievements and despite being a boy’s school noted for its toughness, has never witnessed a single riot in its 64 years of existence.

This feat has been attributed to the foundation laid by its pioneer Headmaster, the late Monsignor Cornelis Priems, the second Headmaster Monsignor J B Eleeza who passed away last month and Mr. Etu- Mantey among others.
