Accra, Aug. 25, GNA - The 2017 Edition of the Leadership Award for Girls has been launched at the Adventist Girls Senior High School at Ntonsu, near Kumasi.
A statement issued by the Osei-Kusi Foundation, organisers of the event, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, on Thursday, said it was launched at the Annual Summer Camp held for girls in Senior High Schools by the Forum of Heads of Girls Senior High Schools (FOHGSHS).
It said the ceremony was attended by 400 students from girls' schools across the country with their headmistresses and teachers.
The aim of the four-day camp was to empower the girls in the area of leadership and empowerment.
Dr Kofi Osei-Kusi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Osei-Kusi Foundation, used the opportunity to speak to the girls on how they could become transformational leaders.
The statement said during the launch, Ahantaman Girls' Senior High School, winners of the 2015 Edition, made a presentation on how they utilised the GH¢ 3,000.00 award money given them for the renovation of the school's washroom.
It said they mentioned that through the project they had acquired certain skills like public speaking, teamwork, improved their leadership skills and boosted their self-confidence.
'After their presentation each of the four members of the team received a cheque for GH¢ 500.00 from the Osei-Kusi Foundation as their share of the award money. They also received certificates for their participation in the award scheme,' it stated.
'The Leadership Award Scheme for Girls (LAG) is an award scheme initiated by the Osei-Kusi Foundation and implemented in partnership with the Forum of Heads of Girls' Senior High Schools (FOHGSHS) in Ghana.'
The statement said it was aimed at empowering young girls with essential leadership skills such as problem solving skills, innovation and self-confidence and to encourage them to participate in decision making at all levels including schools, communities and the nation at large.
It said for one to participate in LAG, a school needed to form a team of three to five students; identify a social need in their school or its environs; obtain an application form and type the answers on a separate sheet.
It said after it had been submitted to OKF, about three to six shortlisted teams/schools would be selected to pitch their proposals at the Grand Finale ceremony during FOGSHS Summer Camp 2017.
It explained that all teams would given five minutes to present their projects.
It said the prize for the winning team was GH¢ 5,000.00 - GH ¢3,000.00 to implement the project and GH ¢2,000.00 for members of the winning team.
