The businessman who handed an amount of GHC11.6million to the founder and pastor of the International God’s Way Church wanted Bishop Daniel Obinim to exorcise the money in a special prayer, according to lawyer for the controversial pastor Atta Akyea.

“Apparently, somebody is alleging that he is coming from a home where they have so much gold and he sold the gold and I think raked in about GHS11.6million, but it seems to him that there is some spirit behind the sale or whatever it is, so, he wanted Bishop Obinim to pray.

“So, he handed over the whole amount of money to him (Obinim) and Bishop Obinim has not given him the money back,” the Abuakwa South MP told Class FM.

The controversial and divisive pastor was detained at the Nima Police station on Tuesday and spent the night in Police cells after his involvement in the GHC11.6 million fraud.

He has been charged with defrauding under false pretense. He was whisked to the BNI office on Wednesday, Starr News’ Wilberforce Asare has reported from the Police headquarters.

Some members of the church who thronged the headquarters to solidarise with their embattled pastor have also been arrested by the Police.

However, Atta Akyea says the drama that followed Obinim’s arrest was completely unnecessary, suggesting that it was a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the release of the Montie three.

“…What was very sad for me was that the man voluntarily went to the police station and you handcuff him. You could see today he’s been at the front pages of the Ghanaian Times and the Daily Graphic as if the nation hasn’t got anything serious to discuss.

“It is as if they need this kind of pictures to overshadow the Montie FM issues and I’m embarrassed by it. I don’t think that the nation should stoop that low; we have more serious things to look at, not Obinim’s matters.”
