JUL 1, 2016 LISTEN

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed worry about what he calls the negative media reportage about the Ghana’s successes.

According to him, the media often place emphasis on the challenges rather than the successes the country has chalked over the past years.

“We are always highlighting our negatives against our positives. Everyday you listen to the media and it is like nothing is working in this country but there are a lot of successes that we should be championing and encouraging our people that we have been able to get this far…”

While emphasizing the need for a restructuring of media programming to project Ghana’s achievements , the President also appealed to the media to be circumspect in their reportage.

“We can go even further. Our media thinking too must change. Every programme goes with phone in sessions. I think the media's duty is to inform and educate and often when you want to educate you must bring a man of God or an academic or an intellectual who understands the subject and let him educate people without the interruption of people calling in and diverting the argument completely.”-

Stop using social media to spread falsehood
The President made a similar appeal a month ago when he appealed to Ghanaians to take advantage of the opportunities social media present rather than using it to “create and spread falsehood.”

“I love the new wave of social media because of my love for freedom of expression. It allows us to get in touch with each other more easily, to receive and spread information, and co-ordinate among ourselves without having to rely on already existing organizations. Through social media, we all get a voice in our democratic conversation.”

“Like any other type of freedom, however, some use it to create and spread falsehood. While I do love creativity, I don't think this is the most useful way to be creating false realities. It's a waste of time and energy,” said the President.
