Abandoned road construction worsens plight of residents

The abandoned road construction works which were started early this year on the infamous Amanfro Top-town stretch near Kasoa in the Ga South Municipality has worsened the plight of residents in the area.

This is making the daily life of the residents making going about their lives unbearable.

Their outcry to persuade the contractor to remedy the situation has fallen on deaf ears.

The construction works which saw steadily progressing were scheduled to complete in August has now been abandoned while the road has developed potholes and gullies as a result of uncovered dredging on the road.

A source close to the contractor tells Joy News that there is no fund for the contractor to continue with the project.

The speedy progression of work on the six-kilometer road which raised hopes of residents that their one-time bumpy road will soon be motorable was dashed when works came a to stand still.

However, the uncompleted gutters constructed have blocked all access roads to homes and waterways thereby causing floods in houses along the road any time it rains.

The state of the construction and the rainy season compelled opinion leaders to plead with the contractor to finish all major works before the rains set in.

According to sources, their concerns were not taken so when the rains started people's home flooded while large volumes of water settled on the road making it difficult for residents to go about their daily activities.

The most affected are school children who had to stay home for weeks till the water dried up are complaining of lagging behind with their academic works.

Amanfrom residents became a target of armed robbers who usually embark on a mass robbery in the community under cover of darkness. There are cases of attempted rape on female residents and the police could do little to apprehend the robbers due to the nature of the road. They complain that which made impossible for the police to carry out night patrol duties.

However, commercial drivers who ply the stretch are contemplating removing their cars due to the cost they incur in every trip. According to them, the current state of the construction is causing them financially as their vehicles keep getting stuck in the water and break down.
