An Accra Criminal High Court hearing the alleged murder case involving Gregory Afoko, brother of the suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has denied the suspect bail.

The court, which was presided over by Justice L.L. Mensah, in his ruling, said the decision was based on the fact that the continuous stay in custody of the accused was in the interest of the public and also to protect him from any attack.

Gregory Afoko has been arraigned before the court over the alleged murder of the Upper East Regional chairman of the NPP.  Lawyers for Gregory Afoko, led by Isreal Ackah had filed an application seeking for bail for their client.

In their application, the lawyers argued that Afoko was not needed by the police for any further investigations, as the Police had concluded all the necessary investigation and presented their case before the court.

Israel Ackah argued that Gregory Afoko will in no way interfere with the prosecution's case and that his client would avail himself at all time. The prosecution on its part opposed vehemently to the bail application, arguing that if the accused person is granted bail, he will abscond.

Afoko's Plea
Gregory Afoko, is being held since May 2015 for the assassination of the Mr Adams Mahama, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Region Chairman.

He has been charged with conspiracy to commit crime to wit murder in which he has pleaded not guilty to the offence. Afoko pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him before a court constituting a seven-member jury.

In February, an Accra District Court committed the suspect to stand trial at the High Court to answer to the charges levelled against him.

The State represented by Mathew Amponsah, tendered 17 exhibits in respect of the trial which included Afoko's caution and charge statements, as well as a post mortem report of the deceased, conducted on November 25, last year, by Dr Lawrence Edusei.
