The Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor, has disclosed he recommended the promotion of the Ashanti regional Police Commander, Nathan Kofi Boakye, from a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) to Commissioner of Police (COP).

Some critics have, however, suggested Mr Boakye’s recent promotion by President John Mahama was politically motivated as the country draws closer to the general elections, but Mr Kudalor, speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s morning show Ghana Yensom on Tuesday June 28, told host Chief Jerry Forson that the promotion was initiated by the Police Service and not the President.

“I recommended him…the president didn’t just wake up and promote him…I am pleased with Kofi Boakye’s works so I recommend him. His appointment is not politically motivated”, he stated.

DCOP Boakye took over from DCOP Augustine Gyening in 2014. He was called to the Bar in 2008. Mr Boakye was adjudged the best law student of his graduating class at the Ghana Law School. He is considered as one of the best police officers in the country.

A letter Signed by DSP Freeman Tetteh, on behalf of the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service said Mr Kofi Boakye’s promotion takes effect from 1 June 2016.
