NUGS peeved over imposition of utility bills on students

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed grave concerns over the imposition of utility bills on students by universities.

President of NUGS Paa Quecy Adu said the decision by university authorities flies in the face of government’s agreement to share payment of utility bills with tertiary institutions.

“We can’t sit at a table to take a decision and one body will go behind us and do a different thing,” he said.

The President of the largest mother student body disclosed this at a news conference organised by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana over what students described as “killer utility fees”.

The University of Ghana school authorities have billed students to pay for some utility bills in the school. They argued the government has been unable to subsidize the payment, hence the decision.

This has angered the students who have threatened to use all means available to them to boycott the payment.

“No university authority or Vice-Chancellor has the liberty to charge students utility bill,” Mr Adu said.

He averred the Union may consider exploring legal action to thwart the decision of the Legon authorities.

The livid Students’ head in Ghana said: “The students of Ghana are already over burden with fees and the Vice-Chancellors should also respect that decision.”
