JUN 29, 2016 LISTEN

Members of the Progressive People's Party (PPP) in the Effutu Constituency in the Central Region will demonstrate today [Wednesday] over a proposed takeover of the company by a private entity under a concessionary deal.

Government has defended the move, arguing that the deal will guarantee greater efficiency in the company but the party is strongly opposing it, citing astronomical increment in bills among others.

Speaking to Citi News, Nana Ofori Owusu, who is the Director of Operations for the PPP said the proposed plan will be of no benefit to Ghanaians.

“Tomorrow protesters are coming out in their numbers. We are also going to demonstrate against our MP who voted for the sale of ECG and did not consult us. We are already paying astronomical prices in relation to ECG bills and now the privatization of ECG is going to make it worse.

“Citizens of Effutu do not have jobs, citizens of Effutu do not have even premix to even engage in their day to day fishing and so Effutu citizens believe that this Mahama administration’s decision to sell ECG and our MP , Alex Afenyo Markin's decision to vote for the same is something that will strangulate and choke the lives of Effutu citizens. They must reverse this immediately.”

This will be second demonstration against the planned takeover.

Last week, workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in some regions also demonstrated over the proposed plan, arguing that the move can lead to job losses.
