Komenda Sugar Factory Shuts Down

The Komenda Sugar Factory has finally been shut down for maintenance.

Akrasi Sarpong, Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the Ministry of Trade, who confirmed this, said the production of sugarcane, the raw material, had entered its lean season; hence the closure of the factory.

The Minority in Parliament kicked against the inauguration of the sugar factory by President John Mahama on May 30 this year, saying it was a means to score political points since the facility was not fully in shape to start operations.

It would be recalled that 48 hours after the inauguration of the factory, the Minority held a press conference and spoke against the move but government immediately rebutted the claims.

The factory is expected to resume operations in October.

.
Management has admitted that the break will also help it to focus on the factory's sugarcane farm which could be ready for harvesting in about four months' time.

Meanwhile, there were reports that workers staged a demonstration last week over the delay in the payment of their salaries.

Workers were initially paid daily, but in recent times their salaries have remained outstanding.

Reports said the workers wore red armbands and demonstrated for over two hours but the protest ended after police stormed the premises of the factory.
