MAY 30, 2016 LISTEN

A man described as a notorious fraudster by the police has been arrested with five passports bearing his photograph but different names in all of them.

The 35-year- old man, Bismark Agyapong, had been on the wanted list of the Visa and Documentation Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service close to a year.

The names in the passports, which have been retrieved by the police, were Bismark Kwaku Agyapong, Asamoah Osafo, Evans Odoom, Richard Appiah Botah and Frank Brobbey Boadu.

Although the pictures in the passport were that of the suspect, the backgrounds and attire he was wearing were all different.

Different bio data
Additionally, his personal details in the passports were also different as some gave his date of birth as September 15, 1984 while others showed he was born on March 2, 1979 and June 6, 1980.

The place of birth were also not the same as some indicated that he was born in Accra and others read Mankesim in the Central Region.

As of the time of filing the story, the police were yet to authenticate the travel documents which had different mobile numbers, date of issue and expiry dates.

Bismark Agyapong is alleged to have duped hundreds of prospective travellers.

He is said to have allegedly defrauded them of various sums of money under the pretext of assisting them to secure visas, passports and other travel documents.

The suspect was arrested by the Accra Central Police upon a tip-off when he was being investigated for defrauding a number of persons under the pretext of helping them to travel to the United States of America and Canada.

However, while the complaints against him were being investigated, the Visa and Documentation Fraud Unit took over the case.

Visa fraud
When the head of the Visa and Documentation Fraud Unit of the CID of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Seth Sewornu, was contacted, he confirmed that the unit had five different complaints against the suspect.

He said the unit had mounted a search for the suspect in connection with visa fraud allegations and was processing him for court.
