Accra, Feb. 25, GNA - The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Wednesday launched a new system of operation that would enable candidates to check their results direct on the Internet. The system named WAECDIRECT Information Service, will provide candidates three super quick-way of results checking, result confirmation and result verification.

Launching the system, the Reverend John Adotey, Head of National Office of WAEC, said the system, which was the first of its kind in the educational sector in the country, would be of immense benefit to examination candidates and other stakeholders.

He said with the provision of such service, a candidate would no longer go to WAEC offices to check results, adding: "With the launch of this product, any internet caf=E9 near you or internet browsing point available can be used. The only requirement is to buy a scratch card to access your results".

He said WAEC deemed the introduction of the system as part of its social responsibility to lend support to candidates by ensuring that they were exposed to the opportunities offered by the Internet. Rev. Adotey said the move was also engineered by the current drive by the Government and the global community to adopt information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a key component of its development strategy.

"This is the beginning of many of such pioneering ICT user support services that WAEC intends to introduce in its attempt to ease the burden of parents and students by completely eliminating the hustle of commuting to and fro between houses, distant towns and more often remote villages to check on WAEC results".

He announced the release of the November/December SSSCE results for private candidates and urged the candidates to access it on www.waecdirect.org/ghana.

Mr Segun Aina, Chairman of Fleet Technology and Chief Executive of the Trust Bank in Nigeria, providers and sponsors of the system, said the partnership with WAEC was driven by the need to deploy creative technology-based solution to resolve key challenges faced by the institution.

He said the system had been well received in Nigeria and it represented a major success, easing especially, the way millions of candidates sitting for examination relate and react with it. Mr Aina said the company was looking forward to extend the opportunity to impact on the wider sub-regional countries. He commended WAEC Ghana, for reinforcing a unique virtue and commitment to advancement particularly in the ICT world.

Mr Aina expressed optimism that the system that had a cross-border multiplier effect would contribute to the economic development of the respective countries.
