Ghana will soon be classified as one of the leading exporters of floor and wall tiles to major markets around the world.

To achieve this feat, Ceramica Tamakloe (CT), one of the foremost local ceramic industries in Ghana, has taken delivery of reconditioned tile plant consisting of a Sacmi 550 Press, an Imas 3 Layer Dryer and a 40 Meter Long Gas fired Roller kiln from Italy to produce floor and wall tiles for export.

It is expected that the machinery would produce 1,200m2 per day at full capacity.

This makes CT the first in Ghana to invest in modern tile equipment.

Conducting press men round the facility at Dodowa in the Dangme West District of the Greater Accra Region, Peter Tamakloe, Managing Director said in 1995 CT started experimenting with terracotta floor and wall tiles, which were sold locally.

He said the response was good but due to the rather long process of producing the tiles, CT was not able to meet the demand, hence supply always fell short of demand.

Mr. Tamakloe stated that at the moment, Ghana has comparative advantage over giant tile-making countries like China and Italy since the raw material, red clay, was abundant in Ghana.

CT, which was established in 1987, started operations as a producer of glazed tableware for the local market. In 1993, the company started exporting home and garden pottery to the United States and some European countries.

CT is also noted for the production of popular water filter known as CT FILTRON which filters dirt, odours and turbidity out of a contaminated water.

Mr Tamakloe suggested that the current situation in the three northern regions where recent floods had contaminated their drinking water could be helped if the government provided the filters to the people.

The University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) recently conducted a test on the filter to authenticate its ability to filter water and the result okayed the product.

Mr. Tamakloe, whose company has provided employment to many of the youth in the area, appealed to the government to help make use of his product locally.
